CMS to expand access to telehealth services
Earlier this week, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) announced that it will expand access to Medicare telehealth services in
order to help protect the public from novel coronavirus (COVID-19). Under the expansion, Medicare can pay for office, hospital and other visits provided via telehealth services. Following suit, the Pennsylvania Department of Human
Services (DHS) has shared its intention to seek waivers with CMS in order to allow for more flexibility in the state’s Medicaid, CHIP and managed care programs. PAFP President Tracey Conti, MD has called for commercial health insurers
in the state to also expand access to telemedicine to their enrollees.
“Family medicine physicians are on the front lines of this pandemic, and patients are urged to call their physician if they suspect they have the COVID-19
virus,” Dr. Conti said. “Broadening physicians’ options to utilize mainstream telehealth and virtual health methods will help patients and physicians deal with this crisis. Further, expanding these options now will enable patients
seeking routine care the ability to avoid potential exposure to the virus.”
