CRNPs reject pilot proposal for independent practice
The Coalition of Nurse Practitioners has rejected a proposal by House Professional Licensure Chair Dave Hickernell to create a pilot project allowing CRNPs to practice independently in Federally Designated Health Physician Shortage Areas. Earlier this week, the PAFP issued the following statement to the chairman regarding his proposal:
“The PAFP has long been committed to the premise that all members of the health care team, including CRNPs, bring utmost value to the team and patient care, however patients are best served when the team is physician-led. We have concerns for the safety of patients and their quality of care should CRNPs be allowed to practice independently and not under a collaborative agreement with a physician. As scientists, we also appreciate that one way to address concerns is to develop a pilot and study its outcomes. The PAFP is open to exploring the concepts outlined in Chairman Hickernell’s proposal and would welcome the opportunity for further discussion on the details of a pilot project. The PAFP is committed to providing the highest quality care and ensuring the safety of patients across Pennsylvania.”
At this time, no further action on the proposal is anticipated.
