Pharmacists Push for Law to Vaccinate Children over 7
National pharmacy chains and the Pennsylvania Pharmacists Association want to see passage of House Bill 776 or Senate Bill 819, which would allow pharmacists and pharmacy interns to provide all injectable products to children over 7 years of age. Current Pennsylvania law allows them to provide injections only to those over 18. The PAFP, along with the Pennsylvania chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics and the Pennsylvania Medical Society, has been opposed to these bills due to concerns with the complexities of childhood vaccines and “catch-up” schedules, adverse reaction protocols, and primary care physician notification issues.

CMS Retiring 1500 (08/05) Claim Form
The dual-use period in which Medicare would accept the old CMS 1500 (08/05) or the new CMS 1500 (02/12) will come to an end March 31, 2014. Beginning April 1, 2014, all paper claims must be on 1500 (02/12) form to avoid rejection. This revised form adds new functionality for differentiating between ICD-9-CM and ICD-10-CM diagnosis codes, expansion for number of possible diagnosis codes to 12, and qualifiers to identify ordering, referring, or supervising provider roles. Instructions for completing the new form can be found in the Medicare Claims Processing Manual.

Bill Delays ICD-10 Until 2015
A recently passed bill delays the mandatory implementation of the ICD-10 coding system until 2015. While not the root cause, this delay does give providers more time to focus on the requirements of Stage 2 of Meaningful Use and more time to prepare for ICD-10 next year. Meaningful Use, as well as 2014 PQRS, are not included in this delay. This would be a good time to check on the status of your 2014 EHR technology and make sure you and your practice are continuing along the path to better EHR utilization.
