Medical student choice resolution introduced
A resolution addressing medical student choice in primary care was introduced this week in the state House of Representatives. Rep. Paul Schemel (R-Franklin) introduced House Resolution (HR) 625, which would direct the Joint State Government Commission to conduct a study and issue a report on the efforts of medical schools to promote primary care and include primary care experiences as part of the curriculum. HR 625 also attempts to address disparities in populations represented in medicine and increase diversity among those seeking to enter family medicine. The resolution builds on a 2014 study on physician shortages in the Commonwealth. The PAFP is committed to increasing the number of Pennsylvania medical school graduates who enter family medicine to 25% over the next decade and is advocating for immediate passage of HR 625 when the state House returns to session in December.
