PAFP, physician groups rally for prior authorization reform
Earlier this week, PAFP President Mary Stock Keister, MD participated in a press conference with legislators, patient advocates and other physician groups to introduce legislation that would help ease the burden of prior authorization requirements on patients and providers. House Bill 1194 and Senate Bill 920 would bring consistency and transparency to insurance companies’ use of prior authorizations, as well as establish safeguards to ensure that patients get the care they need when they need it. The legislation would also provide a framework for exempting patients from step therapy requirements by insurers when it is medically appropriate. The PAFP is advocating for swift movement of these important reforms through the legislative process.

PAFP president testifies on statewide PDL
PAFP President Mary Stock Keister, MD testified at a public hearing on Oct. 23 before the Senate Health and Human Services Committee. Dr. Stock Keister expressed the Academy’s concerns regarding the impending implementation of the Pennsylvania Department of Human Services’ statewide preferred drug list (PDL), which will impact patients in the state’s medical assistance program. Beginning Jan. 1, 2020, all medical assistance prescriptions designated as “non-preferred” on the statewide PDL will be subject to prior authorization. The PAFP encourages members to contact your state legislators to share the impact this policy will have on your patients.
