PAFP opposes bill to restrict access to critical opioid addiction treatment medication
Legislation that would assess a fee and require health care providers to register with the Pennsylvania Department of Drug and Alcohol Programs in order to prescribe opioid addiction treatment medication was passed over in the House Human Services Committee on Wednesday, Sept. 18 at the request of the PAFP and other stakeholders. Senate Bill 675, titled the Buprenorphine Medically Assisted Treatment Act, would disrupt access to evidence-based treatment for opioid use disorder and curb efforts to stem the opioid epidemic. PAFP members who offer office-based buprenorphine treatment are DEA-trained and certified to prescribe this medication. Increased regulatory burdens will be especially detrimental to patients seeking help by discouraging family physicians from offering this valuable, effective treatment. PAFP staff will continue to keep members updated on the status of SB 675 as we work with legislators to address concerns from all stakeholders.
