Pennsylvania v. JUA in the courts
Gov. Tom Wolf, the general assembly, and the attorney general aim to follow through on the final budget package and extract $200 million in “excessive” reserves held by the Joint Underwriting Association (JUA). State government enacted language that would end the existence of the medical liability insurer of last resort on Dec. 1 should the funds not be transferred into the state’s general fund. The JUA is seeking an injunction to stop the transfer, which it says will cripple the nonprofit. The PAFP will be closely monitoring the situation with concerns about disruption to liability markets.
