PAFP supports POLST legislation
The PAFP’s Board of Directors and many stakeholders support newly introduced legislation to codify Pennsylvania Orders for Life-Sustaining Treatment (POLST) across all health care settings, eliminating out-of-hospital do-not-resuscitate (OOH-DNR) orders for patients who voluntarily wish to have such an order. Senate Bill (SB) 623, introduced by Sen. Gene Yaw (R-Lycoming), and the identical House Bill (HB) 1196 introduced by Rep. Bryan Cutler (R-Lancaster), are in the health committees in both chambers awaiting action. While POLST forms are widely used, this legislation would authorize a POLST form by law, as a medical order, that may be used to designate end-of-life wishes.
