Pa. Dept. of Health touts drug monitoring program
The Pennsylvania Dept. of Health recently championed the state’s Prescription Drug Monitoring Program (PDMP) at its one-year anniversary. The system currently has 93,000 users, averages 53,000 queries per workday, and shares data with 11 other states and Washington, D.C. The department reports that the number of patients who went to more than five prescribers and pharmacies for Schedule II drugs dropped 86 percent; there has also been a reduction in painkiller prescriptions for minors. The department is now focused on integration with EHRs and pharmacy management systems. The PAFP Board of Directors supported the legislation that created the program.
