Gov. Wolf's consolidation plan under scrutiny
|
|
Budget hearings are revealing deep concerns with Gov. Tom Wolf’s proposal to combine the departments of Health, Aging, and Drug and Alcohol Programs under the Dept. of Human Services. Much of the $90 million saved would come from reducing pharmacists’ dispensing fees under the PACE program and dramatically cutting spending on the state health centers and county assistance offices. The PAFP also has concerns with the proposed move of the primary care practitioner line item from the Dept. of Health to PHEAA, affecting the family medicine residency expansion project and the physician loan repayment program. The consolidation requires legislative approval.

American Health Care Act released
The Republican plan to replace the Affordable Care Act has been released. Supporters of the law claim the American Health Care Act maintains some of the 2010 law's most popular provisions, including forbidding insurers from denying coverage, while no longer penalizing Americans for having health insurance. But the plan is facing criticism from both sides of the aisle, with some Republicans saying it's too similar to Obamacare, and Democrats alleging it will cost more and cover fewer Americans. The PAFP will continue to keep you up to date with developments.

'Speak Out' against nurse practitioner independence
The newly introduced Senate Bill 25 would eliminate the important patient safeguard of a required written collaborative agreement between a nurse practitioner (NP) and two physicians in Pennsylvania; a House version is also expected. Use the AAFP's Speak Out tool to tell your legislator to oppose this bill.
