Nurse practitioner independence bill reintroduced
Sen. Camera Bartolotta (R-Washington) has introduced Senate Bill 25 that would eliminate the collaborative agreement requirement between a nurse practitioner and two physicians. The bill includes the prerequisite of three years and 3,600 hours under a collaborative agreement before eligibility. Similar legislation last session passed the Senate, but not the House. Sen. Bartolotta contends nearly 35 percent of Pennsylvanians live in areas with inadequate primary care services, and by eliminating the collaborative agreements, nurse practitioners would serve in those areas, solving access problems. A House version is expected. The PAFP opposes due to vast training differences and patient safety concerns.

It's the apex of the flu season: the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) characterizes flu activity in Pennsylvania as "widespread." Physicians should remind patients that it is not too late to get the flu shot - in fact, most flu activity occurs in January or later.
