Public Health
Tighter prescribing rules may harm patients
|
Tthe anti-abuse strategy of "cutting off the supply at its source" often has the adverse effect of keeping appropriate medical treatment away from patients with chronic pain. According to Kaiser Health News, new rules from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) encourage but do not demand more stringent coverage requirements for opioids, but doctors fear this will limit patients' access to needed medications and therapies.
