Pa. prescription drug monitoring portal launches
Starting this Friday, physicians are to query patients’ controlled substance prescription history (Schedules II through V). Prescribers (or their delegates) are required to check the Pennsylvania Prescription Drug Monitoring Program Portal (PA PDMP AWARxE) for each patient the first time the patient is prescribed a controlled substance by the prescriber, or if the prescriber has reason to believe, using sound clinical judgment, that a patient may be abusing or diverting drugs. However, the Pa. Dept. of Health is recommending prescribers check the system every time before prescribing. Please click here for more information including tutorials, FAQs and registration instructions.

Pa. among states with most travel-related Zika cases
While mosquitoes carrying the Zika virus have not yet made their way into Pennsylvania, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports Pennsylvania is one of the states with the most confirmed travel-related Zika cases. According to the Pa. Dept. of Health, there are 82 confirmed infections in the Keystone State with 120 test results pending. Zika is spread primarily through the bite of a mosquito, though it can also be spread through sexual contact or from a mother to a baby during pregnancy.
