Hepatitis C testing bill signed into law
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in 2012 issued guidelines recommending anyone born between 1945 through 1965 be tested for Hepatitis C. The CDC maintains its one-time testing guideline will prevent 120,000 deaths. House Bill 59 (now Act 87 of 2016) requires hospitals and primary care physicians to offer testing for Hep C to persons within that age bracket, with some exception such as emergency care or previous testing. If the screening is reactive, appropriate follow up or referral is to occur. The law goes into effect Sept. 19.

Remember to discuss vaccines with your patients
As students and parents prepare for the start of another academic year, remember to talk to your patients about their vaccine schedule. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) made changes to its vaccination recommendations effective February 1, 2016. You can review the changes by clicking here. The CDC offers printable vaccine catch-up schedules and now an interactive vaccine schedule app for clinicians. You can also learn more about vaccine recommendations by attending live CME sessions at the PAFP’s Kalahari CME Conference in November.
