Pa. legislature to hold special session on opioid crisis
In a few weeks, the Pennsylvania General Assembly is expected to hold a special session on the opioid epidemic. This comes at a time when six states, including New York and Rhode Islanf in June, have passed legislation aimed at curbing the opioid and heroin epidemic. Among laws passed in other states and being considered in Pennsylvania are mandatory CME for physicians, limits on opioid prescribing, and possible changes to the query requirements to the yet-to-launch ABC-MAP prescription monitoring program.

As overdose deaths rise, take advantage of free resources
According to the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), nearly 3,400 people died of a drug overdose in Pennsylvania last year. WITF reports that's an increase of nearly 24 percent from 2014, an increase of more than 600 deaths. Heroin - often mixed with other powerful drugs like fentanyl - is the main culprit. In the midst of the nationwide opioid epidemic, the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) has developed new resources to help family physicians combat the crisis. These offerings include a chronic pain management toolkit and a free CME webcast focused on chronic opioid therapy. Please click here for more.
