Budget; special session on opioids; NP independence

|
The Pennsylvania legislature appears to be nearing a budget agreement which may include new monies to expand addiction treatment, while the governor and legislative leaders have announced a special session will occur in the future on the opioid overdose crisis. The state’s new prescription monitoring program is now collecting dispensing information and should be available for prescribers by Labor Day. Meanwhile, the Pennsylvania Coalition of Nurse Practitioners continues to try to move its collaborative-ending legislation through the Senate.

Knowledge is power in opioid prescribing

The misuse of opioids has become a major public health issue. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports prescription opioid pain relievers are the reason behind the misuse of opioids, resulting in the deaths of 78 Americans every day. Did you know the PAFP has educational resources to help answer some of your questions about opioids and pain management? The upcoming November CME Conference at Kalahari will features sessions on opioid prescribing and treatment protocols. Registration is now open to attend. RPC/CHCC concludes A1c challenge
|
|
The PAFP’s Residency Program and Community Health Center Collaborative (RPC/CHCC) has concluded its sixth year of quality improvement projects. This past academic year, the practices were challenged to move the most number of patients with an A1c greater than 9 to less than 9. The practices participated in live learning sessions, monthly team calls, and monthly data submissions. The practices were split into three categories based on their patient population with diabetes. The winners for the challenge included Lancaster FMR Downtown Family Medicine, LGH Quarryville Water L Aument FHC, and UPMC St Margaret Lawrenceville.
