Hepatitis C conundrum for policymakers, providers
|
|
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in 2012 issued guidelines recommending anyone born between 1945 through 1965 get tested for Hepatitis C.The CDC maintains its one-time testing guideline will prevent 120,000 deaths. House Bill 59, currently in the Senate and nearing passage, would require hospitals and primary care physicians to offer testing for Hep C to persons within that age bracket in line with the CDC’s recommendation. However, costs have risen exponentially with new treatments, straining already struggling Medicaid programs. The emergence of more Hep C diagnoses are creating plenty of challenges for providers, insurers, and policymakers.
