Medical marijuana soon coming to Pa.?
Legislation which would legalize some forms of medical marijuana in Pennsylvania gained House approval last week after months of debate and several changes to the original bill. “While further research is necessary, if Senate Bill 3 becomes law, the PAFP will work with the Pa. Dept. of Health and our sister chapters in states where medical cannabis is legal to educate our physicians on best practices,” said PAFP President Robert Rodak, MD. “The PAFP remained neutral on the legislation, but made several legislative recommendations, including two important items included in the final language: clinical research provisions and physician-led usage recommendations.”

Join the PAFP's asthma quality improvement project
Spring is in the air - along with many asthma triggers. The PAFP has partnered with the Pa. Dept. of Health to offer an asthma quality improvement project aiming to improve asthma control among pediatric patients with asthma through education, training, and technical assistance for primary care practices. The data-driven project connects practices with local resources and provides a collaborative learning environment helping practices learn from each other. Enduring CME webinars are available. If your practice is located in Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Montgomery or Philadelphia County and you have interest in participating in the project, contact Lindsey Killian.

New CMS interactive map tracks health disparities
This week, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Office of Minority Health (OMH) released a new interactive map to increase understanding of geographic disparities in chronic disease among Medicare beneficiaries. The Mapping Medicare Disparities (MMD) Tool identifies disparities in health outcomes, utilization, and spending by race and ethnicity and geographic location. Understanding geographic differences in disparities is important to informing policy decisions and efficiently targeting populations and geographies for interventions.
