Takeaways from PAFP's Pain Management Project Workshop
|
The PAFP’s Pain Management Project is a quality improvement study for family medicine practices from counties with high rates of opioid overdose hospitalizations and death. Here are some takeaways from their workshop last week
- PDSAs (plan-do-study-act cycles) and measurement are critical; change requires process.
- Consider behavioral strategies too. (Example: Ask the patient to suck on an Altoids mint when they want a pain pill; if they still want the pill when the Altoids is gone, they can take it.)
- Patients at higher risk for misuse need more structure and strict parameters.
