Open Payment System Functioning Again
Following a physician complaint, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) found a glitch in the Open Payments reporting system. Information submitted by manufacturers and group purchasing organizations was intermingled which resulted in wrong state license numbers and national provider identifiers for physicians with the same first and last names. The system was taken offline on Aug. 3 so system fixes could be implemented to resolve the issues. To assist CMS to ensure data integrity, physicians are strongly encouraged to review their records before the deadline of Sept. 30, 2014.

Emergency Preparedness Survey Findings Highlight Significant Gaps
Thanks to members who responded to the spring 2014 emergency preparedness survey. Results show sizable gaps in emergency and surge planning. The PAFP is working with the Dept. of Health and Drexel University to bring you education and resources. A webinar series is planned for November – stay tuned. Meanwhile, the top three things you can do now: (1) read this practice checklist, (2) create a registry for patients with special health care needs, (3) register now for the PA-Health Alert Network. PA-HAN is how the Dept. of Health communicates with practices about public health alerts and during emergencies.
