In April, the Pennsylvania House of Representatives passed House Resolution 659, introduced by Rep. Doyle Heffley (R-Carbon County) which tasked the Joint State Government Commission to create a diverse committee to analyze the issues and make recommendations to elected officials on possible changes to state laws and regulations to stem the tide of opioid abuse. The yearlong effort is set to begin late June.

Show Your Support for Extension of Medicaid Parity
In an effort to support extension of Medicaid parity payments, which are due to expire Dec. 31, 2014, the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) is collecting stories from family physicians on how the increased payment for Medicaid services has made a difference in their practices. Please take a moment to contribute to their lobbying efforts as they meet with legislators over the summer. Their goal is to have letters from all 50 states by July 1. If you have any questions, contact Tracy Koval, PAFP Director of Practice Advocacy, at tkoval@pafp.com.

2014 Measles Outbreaks Breaking Records
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR) states that incidence of measles has spiked. Disease tracking indicates infection is traveling across borders to the U.S., where it was officially declared eliminated in 2000. Know the signs of infection; vaccinate patients according to measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) recommendations. Provide a strong recommendation – unvaccinated travelers are infecting unvaccinated individuals when they return home to the U.S. Read more at the MMWR website. PAFP resources include a free CME webcast (Vaccine Potpourri) and two free 30-minute webcasts for staff on vaccine administration, storage and handling.
