Nurse Practitioners Rally for Independence from Physicians
In Harrisburg on April 29, more than 100 advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs) visited lawmakers and held a press event in the Capitol Rotunda, calling for passage of Senate Bill 1063 sponsored by Sen. Patricia Vance (R-Cumberland). The bill would expand APRNs’ scope of practice and prescriptive rights in the areas of pediatrics, family medicine, women’s health, and psychiatry. The Pennsylvania Coalition of Nurse Practitioners contends the current law limits access, adds cost, wastes resources, and is unnecessary. The PAFP opposes.

ICD-10 Updates: End-to-End Testing; Final Rule
With the signing of the Protecting Access to Medicare Act of 2014 enacting the delay in adoption of ICD-10, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has canceled the July 2014 ICD-10 end-to-end testing with Medicare Administrative Contractors (MACs) and the Common Electronic Data Interchange (CEDI) contractor. Future opportunities will be announced in early 2015. The Dept. of Health and Human Services (HHS) expects to release an interim final rule in the near future requiring the use of ICD-10 beginning Oct. 1, 2015, and requiring HIPAA-covered entities to continue using ICD-9-CM through September 30, 2015.
