DHS TO IMPLEMENT STATEWIDE PDL
Earlier this year, the Pennsylvania Department of Human Services (DHS) announced its intentions to implement a statewide preferred drug list (PDL) for the state’s medical assistance fee-for-service and managed care delivery systems effective Jan. 1, 2020. While implementation of a Statewide PDL will most likely save the state about $85 million annually and allow DHS to collect an additional $261 million in pharmacy rebates, it will ultimately result in an additional $176 million cost, as well as loss of market share rebates to managed care organizations.
Beginning Jan. 1, 2020, all medical assistance prescriptions designated as “non-preferred” on the new Statewide PDL will be subject to prior authorization. It is estimated that about half a million prescriptions will be impacted. The PAFP will be providing testimony at an upcoming legislative hearing on this issue and encourages members to contact your state Senator and Representative to express your concerns and the potential impact that implementation of the Statewide PDL will have on your patients
