The “Path to Practice Panel” features Family Physician panelists with diverse practice types sharing how their experiences, training, personal and clinical interests led them to their current practice. We hope to inspire both residents and students with panelists’ stories and foster some thoughtful discussion. This panel program is coordinated by Molly Talley, Pennsylvania Academy of Family Physicians, and Angela Jefferies, Pennsylvania Association of Community Health Centers. 

Meet our panelists:

Andrew Goodman, MD
Mazoni Center, Philadelphia

Dr. Goodman is the Associate Medical Director at Philadelphia’s Mazzoni Center.  He practices as a primary care physician with a focus on the needs of the underserved lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community, including treatment of HIV and transgender hormone therapy.  Dr. Goodman received his medical degree in 2007 from Wayne State University.  He joined the staff at the health center after completing his family medicine residency at the University of Pennsylvania in 2010.  He has research interests in transgender health.

Kristi Johnson, DO
Spectrum Health Services, Philadelphia

Dr. Johnson is Chief Medical Officer for Spectrum Health Services. She received her bachelors in Microbiology from Howard University and went on to earn her Doctor of Osteopathy (DO) degree at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. She completed her residency in Family Medicine at North Philadelphia Health System’s St Joseph’s Hospital. Dr. Johnson worked in private community practice following residency, then returned to medical education at North Philadelphia Health System as the Associate Director of Medical Education and Internship Program Director. In 2006, she became Medical Director and practicing physician for the Philadelphia Department of Public Health. She recently made the move to her present position with Spectrum Health Services. The aspect of community medicine that excites Dr. Johnson most is direct patient care of the family – children, parents, grandparents.

Leon McCrea, MD
Crozer-Keystone Family Medicine, Springfield

Dr. McCrea is a member of the faculty at Crozer-Keystone Family Medicine Residency, and maintains a busy practice of full-spectrum family medicine, including an active obstetrics practice. He earned his medical degree from University of Pittsburgh and completed his residency in family medicine at Crozer, where he joined the faculty following residency. His special clinical interests include women’s health and adolescent health. His practice is a level-3 NCQA recognized Patient-Centered Medical Home.

Monica Mallory-Whitmore, DO
Greater Philadelphia Health Action

Dr. Mallory-Whitmore is a board certified family physician and former National Health Service Corps Scholar. She received her Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry from The Lincoln University of Pa and went on to receive her Doctor of Osteopathy (DO) degree from the New York College of Osteopathic Medicine. She completed her residency training in Family Medicine at Mercy Suburban Hospital in Norristown, Pennsylvania in 2006 and began working for the Greater Philadelphia Health Action (GPHA) at the Woodland Avenue Health Center in August of the same year. In May 2012, She became Clinical Director for GPHA at the Wilson Park Medical Center. Dr. Mallory-Whitmore, enjoys all realms of Family Medicine, but has an affinity towards community medicine and adolescent health. In 2009, Dr. Mallory-Whitmore and a former colleague began a program called Teen Scene: mentoring and educating adolescents on the risks of sexually transmitted infections.
